The Great Eurovision Shitshow of 2024

Taken from elizabethdanger on twitter

May 10, 2024

Eurovision's downfall so far đŸ§”:
-Looks like Netherlands have been DQd. Flags have been removed from their dressing room.
-Most reported *but unconfirmed* reason is that he got physical with Israeli media, who were heckling him about his dead parents.
-Press events all cancelled.

-Some reports now of Spanish media *also* claiming that Israeli media became physical with them.
-Reports that arena staff are in absolute chaos.
-Italy gave impromptu, mournful speech outside venue and then sang 'Imagine.'
-Fans outside arena already protesting Dutch DQ.

-Eurovision have only provided statement that Netherlands were 'suspended' from rehearsals, reports indicate dancers left 'last minute' in full hair and makeup, seemed very last minute, suspension doesn't explain removed flags.

Confirmed so far:
-Removal of Dutch flags
-Italy having a John Lennon moment
-Fan protests
-Dutch suspension from rehearsals

Multiple sources reporting EBU is meeting with Eurovision boss Martin Osterdahl in private now.
(tweet from VocaISuspension: UNCONFIRMED: The EBU alongside Martin Osterdahl will be holding a private meeting to discuss today's events. This isnt confirmed, however multiple media sources alongside Aftonbladet and SVT have stated this.)

-Joost has reportedly unfollowed Eurovision on instagram, deleted all Eurovision stories.

- SVT has claimed the incident with Joost involved female photographer but I can't seem to get reliable confirmation on if she was Israeli or not.

Angelina (Italy) giving her speech and singing, which like, look, this feels OMINOUS.
(EurovisionNewz: Angelina mango having a speech in the press room & singing “Imagine” by John Lennon. “Tonight, I want the music to speak”)

-The EBU website has reportedly crashed, but some users in Europe are reporting they're still able to load it.

Take this with a grain of salt because Reddit, but here's the report that Joost's team leaving rehearsal was 'very last minute.'

- There continues to be different stories about WHO the photographer was with.

Confirmation of the Dutch flag being removed from dressing room

Malta making an update shortly, speculation in the community is that they will announce that they'll be filling Joost's spot. (SPECULATION being the key word here.)

ACTUAL BREAKING - Dutch media have stated during live TV broadcast that there's a possibility of Spain also withdrawing due to today's events.

Correction about Spain - someone in our Eurovision discord has clarified that this may have been mistranslated and it was just an additional report on Spain being involved in an altercation

What we know for a fact so far:
-Incident the Netherlands and they were suspended from rehearsals. Incident was a physical altercation involving media, different reports on WHAT media, though.
-Dutch flags removed from dressing rooms.
-Statement from EBU soon.

Things that are speculated but seem to be the case (although unconfirmed:)
-Netherlands either DQ'd or withdrawn from Eurovision 2024.
-Malta possibly taking their spot in the finals.

UPDATE: Malta not announcing participation in the final as a replacement, just making a really unfortunately timed announcement about new music

CONFIRMED: Spanish delegation has 'demanded that Eurovision ensure respect' of their commitment to freedom of the press and freedom of opinion.

It's confirmed that the above statement follows a Spanish journalist reporting that they were 'intimidated' by the Israeli press. source

Here's a video circulating of an Israeli journalist apparently attempting to provoke either Joost Klein or his team. source

Have seen several reports that the photographer in the Joost incident was NOT Israeli, still waiting for some kind of official statement (if we even get one confirming the photographer's nationality)

Update: Jury show is meant to start but the stage director has come on stage and reportedly introduced a singer and then left. No additional info given, a bit weird, everyone is confused.

CONFIRMED: NETHERLANDS REMOVED FROM EUROVISION FINAL RUNNING ORDER SHOWN IN THE ARENA.

Dutch news reporting all Dutch flags have been removed and taken backstage. I think we can safely say that we won't be seeing Joost in the finals. Only question left is WHY.

Some in the community hoping that there's still hope Joost may still perform in the grand final, but if he's out of the running order during the Jury judging, I doubt that. Jury counts for 50% of your score.

Still no statement or news from the EBU about what is going on, audiences are entirely in the dark and speculation is running so rampant that every minute the EBU holds off on saying something, their image becomes more and more irreparably damaged.

Dutch media now saying that Joost has been removed from the Jury show performance but has not been officially been disqualified yet pending the investigation into the incident. Hope remains that he might make the grand final.

EBU HAVE MADE A STATEMENT: Joost not disqualified, investigation ongoing, footage from semifinal 2 will be used in lieu of performing in the jury show.

The EBU deleted their own website, by the way. This is absolutely bonkers. Like, on another level of shitshow

Audience told Joost will not be performing. Audience rightly pissed. source

Audience is booing that one country's entry, as expected. source

Media have been harassing Joost as him and the Dutch delegation await the results of the EBU Investigation into today's incident.

Israel's delegation using their social media to insult other acts including Bambie Thug (Ireland.) Chinless behaviour, against the contest's official rules. Surely the EBU will also suspend them from performing until they finish an investigation, right?
((The Israeli Delegation have been insulting Bambie Thug from Ireland and other artists on Social Media, which violates the official rules of the contest. source, source))

Update: Malmo Police confirmed to be involved in the Joost investigation.

The state of the Eurovision community before I go to bed:
-Everyone was already mad but even the people who set it aside to try and watch anyway are seeing red right now.
-Poor comms on EBU's part has made this 700x worse.
-Not a single person has confidence in Eurovision anymore

My final update before I sleep: Pre-show rest of the world voting has been delayed by two hours (was supposed to open at midnight.)

I have woken up just to let everyone know that ROTW voting is STILL suspended and there have been no updates.

May 11, 2024

UPDATE: Malmo police statement reports a complaint was made against Joost involving a female TV employee. Have "interrogated" both parties. Matter has now been passed on to public prosecutor.

Still no word from EBU about his participation in Eurovision btw

Update (a little delayed because I had the audacity to go to the store): SVT reports-
“- We have a man who is suspected of unlawful threats. The suspected crimes must have been committed at the Malmö arena on Thursday evening, says Pelle Vamstad, police spokesperson.”

Huge shout out to the Dutch and Swedish posters in my replies who are helping with updates about their local media, my audience is primarily English speaking so translations are a huge help

While we wait for updates on the Joost situation, let's look at another Eurovision oopsy-woopsy-fucky-wucky this year: the Italian semifinal vote results leaking ON TELEVISION. For those unaware, you're not meant to disclose these numbers until after. source

Italian voters weren't even just upset but furious. Allegations in the community are pretty spicy with the 39.9% vote towards Israel raising eyebrows in a country that's pretty vocal about their participation. This has lead to allegations of sim card farming.

Sim card farming is a form of vote fraud that has been deployed in the past. Azerbaijan is a notable example of this occurring in the past.

Is this actually a case of sim card farming? I don't know. No one knows. It's just an allegation. Please use reading comprehension. I'm reporting on the downfall and Italy's result leak is a part of that so here we are.

To be entirely fair, pretty much every Eurovision has one entrant that's accused of sim card farming and it's been like this since 2013 (before this, to copeium was 'it's all block voting,' but this is definitely a very volatile year for this to happen.

UPDATE AND CONFIRMED: Joost Klein disqualified from Eurovision 2024.

”We maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards inappropriate behaviour at our event and are committed to providing a safe and secure working environment for all staff at the Contest”

"We would like to make it clear that, contrary to some media reports and social media speculation, this incident did not involve any other performer or delegation member." - Eurovision statement.

To my knowledge, this is the first time a Eurovision finalist has EVER been disqualified mid-contest like this. Songs have been disqualified and countries have withdrawn as a result, but no one has been disqualified during the ACTUAL event.

The community is in uproar. Like, feral. I would not want to be working on the ground at Eurovision this year. These are terrible, terrible optics given the already atrocious vibes reported from the audience and the allegations surrounding that one country's delegation's behavior

I cannot stress how bad this is. From all sides, EBU/Eurovisions lack of communication (even towards other delegates!) has allowed this to get completely out of control and harm literally everyone, even _that one country._ Shockingly unprofessional.

If I were a label/broadcaster/talent management, the handling of this would absolutely discourage me from sending any talent to participate next year. This is AWFUL.

Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS responds to Joost Klein's disqualification: "We find the disqualification disproportionate and we are shocked by the decision. We deeply regret this."

Lots of questioning going around now about what Eurovision considers to be unsafe behaviour/harassment etc. Lots of social media posts from delegations being brought up including photos of people taken in backstage areas without consent. Optics are dogshit, just pure shite

From the way this was handled compared to every other incident of things going awry during Eurovision, it's heavily speculated that Eurovision/EBU HAD NO PROCESS lined up for if something like this happened.

Dutch commentator claims that the "Incident hardly amounts to anything."

EBU HAVEN'T EVEN WORKED OUT IF THEY'LL BE LETTING THE DUTCH VOTE OR NOT. Expect update in 30mins -- although as we've learned 30 minutes in EBU time is not 30 minutes in regular time.

I AM WAITING TO VERIFY THIS SCREENSHOT, PLEASE TAKE THIS WITH A GRAIN OF SALT -- reports coming in that Estonia will not be performing in solidarity with the Netherlands.

UPDATE: Looks like the Estonian delegation has corrected this and Estonia WILL perform tonight.

UNCONFIRMED: Members from the media centre have stated that the Israeli delegation are STILL harassing journalists even after Joost's disqualification. The EBU has still not given any sort of statement on the Israeli delegation who have broken over 4 competition rules.

Israeli artist added to Ukrainian 'peacemaker' list due to her past support of the annexation of Crimea.

The 'peacemaker' list is a list of people considered to be 'enemies of Ukraine.'

UPDATE:

There has also been alleged information shown to those who operate the "PEACEMAKER" list that show that Eden Golan's family are still operating a business inside of Russia.

Keeping in mind that there could be a couple of reasons for this that aren't a huge deal (especially given this event seems to be run by confused toddlers,) looks like Ireland and Greece are missing from the Eurovision flag parade event?

Update about logistics of Dutch DQ from Eurovision: Viewers in the Netherlands still allowed to vote, others may still be charged if they manage to vote for the Netherlands somehow.

Update: Eurovision continues to 'dampen' (mute boos or replace them digitally with cheers) during the broadcast and EVEN JENDRIK IS MAD. source

INTERESTING: During simulation of result reading (where they cross to the representatives overseas) in rehearsals, Finland either refused to say 'Israel,' saying 'Ireland' instead -- or, if the Eurovision team is to be believed, it was a technical error. source

BREAKING AND CONFIRMED: Bambie Thug (Ireland) will not be participating in dress rehearsal due to a 'situation' while they were waiting to go on stage for the flag parade rehearsal that needed 'urgent attention from the EBU.'

CONFIRMED: Last year's entrant from Norway has dropped out of presenting their jury points tonight. Unconfirmed as to WHY.

the dutch radio (qmusic) is so pissed at the decision to disqualify joost klein that they're now playing europapa on repeat 😭😭 iconic

CONFIRMED: Ireland has confirmed that Bambie Thug has raised a complaint relating to the Israeli commentary about them, claiming is it a breach of the rules of the contest.

HUGE IF TRUE: UK, Ireland, Portugal, Switzerland have allegedly engaged in 'crisis' meetings with EBU, ALLEGEDLY *may* be considering withdrawing from Grand Final.

God bless [profile] vocaisuspension
- Israeli embassies in foreign countries calling citizens and asking them to vote in the grand final tonight. Not quite the same as what Azerbaijan did (sim farming in foreign countries) but FUNNY, and not HA HA funny.

Sorry, that should have said 'accused of,' was editing to get it under the character limit and did a fucky wucky, my bad.

CONFIRMED: SVT has confirmed that the EBU is currently in a crisis meeting about *gestures at everything*

Erevtov reporting that Ireland, Greece and Switzerland complaining about Israeli delegation filming without consent. This is notably a CRIME in Sweden.

BREAKING: France interrupted their performance at rehearsals to talk about peace and love and can't we all just get along PLEASE. source

Audience sang Europapa (The Netherland's song) over the top of Israel at dress rehersal. source

The Eurovision broadcast has censored/edited out France's speech from their performance during recaps and replays.

Reports that Italy's entrant has been fined for giving a statement about the incident in the arena last night involving Joost. Waiting for more details before I confirm, my Italian is dogshit.

Poland making a uh. Statement. Of some kind. I think? Can anyone clear this one up for me? https://instagram.com/p/C61OXfBoqM1/

Some more unconfirmed stuff floating around about Joost. Take this at face value. (Screencap of what he said to the reporter: "You again? Next time I will hit you!" after a production member was in his way multiple times before his gig was about to start)

Re: Poland statement - Looks like they didn't include Israel in their visuals or statement. Nice spotting!

UPDATE: Nikkitutorials kicking off during dress rehearsals, enforcement of voting rules catching strays. source

UPDATE: Alessandra (Norway's 2023 artist) has released a video explaining that she has dropped out of presenting Norway's jury points at the Eurovision grand final specifically in support of Palestine.

BREAKING, OFFICIAL: AVROTOS gives official statement regarding the Joost incident, alleges that female camerawoman filmed him without consent after repeated requests for her to stop. (Statement is in Dutch and then in English.)

A quick plea while I have a second: if you are on the ground at Eurovision please be ready and prepared to record stuff. Footage from the audience and attendees has proven absolutely invaluable to documenting this entire shitshow and it's of historical importance.

I will be absolutely shocked if one of the acts does not do something huge on stage in protest and there is no way Eurovision/EBU will allow that on broadcast, they will have a kill-switch, we NEED the audience to document that shit themselves.

BREAKING: EBU doubling down, shitting the bed, to no one's surprise. Director General of EBU states "The Israeli team does not break any rules of the competition," despite recorded instances of them doing so, several times, published by the Israeli team.

BREAKING: An audience member has allegedly been escorted away by police and made to dispose of a non-binary flag as it's 'political,' according to several people on the ground.

Austrian delegation is reporting that Ireland, Switzerland and Estonia are refusing to perform and that EBU will use rehearsal recordings instead. Also reporting that France will only perform is Slimane can do his speech again. (Thanks [profile] thegrimrecapper
)

UPDATE, OFFICIAL: Norwegian media going sicko mode, states "in its struggle to remain apolitical, the EBU has become like a small fascist state in itself." Headline of article is "for et shitshow."

I have had NUMEROUS people report to me in this thread that they are getting Youtube ads encouraging them to vote for Israel. I'm unsure if this kind of promotion is against Eurovision rules (which, as we have learned, mean nothing.) Can anyone confirm?

UPDATE: Reports that venue security has changed, bags that were previously permitted in the venue are no longer permitted, even if in the permitted size and x-rayed.

UPDATE: Theres a "rules of eurovision" segment planned for the grand final tonight. Can only imagine how well this well go down with the audience. #Eurovision2024 #JoostKlein

We are now an hour and a half away from the finals kicking off and I haven't seen anything about Bambi Thug's complaint being addressed.

UPDATE: The Dutch Commentator for tonight has just gone on RTL News and stated "Fuck the EBU".

The Sun is reporting that Loreen is refusing to present Israel with the Eurovision trophy in the event she wins

"There is a plan in place for Loreen to step on stage, leave the trophy on a plinth and depart before the presenters welcome Israel to the stage, should they win the coveted title."

'Sources close to the competition also go on to say that her contract clearly states she is not allowed to say anything defamatory about the European Broadcasting Union, which runs the contest.'

Keep in mind this is The Sun, so like... you know... they're a bit of a gamble...

BREAKING: Bambie Thug (Ireland) has released a new statement on their instagram, stating they have raised MULTIPLE complaints over the duration of the contest and alleging that the EBU confirmed to the Irish delegation and others that KAN (Israel) had broken conduct rules.

Bambie has not received any updates as to what action will be taken and the EBU statement regarding Israel seemingly contradicts what Ireland was told. Good LORD.

BREAKING: Our lord and savior KÀÀrijÀ (Finland's wildly successful Eurovision entrant from last year) has announced on his instagram that he will no longer be presenting Finland's jury points tonight as it 'does not feel right.'

Hyllie station, the train station next to the arena, has been closed by police. Unsure why at this time. Trains have been stopped.

There's reports that Dutch flags are being refused entry into the area, however, I did some research and it looks like the ones that have been refused entry are ones with political messages or messages about Joost on them. Plain flags seem to be fine.

I also checked tiktok on the toilet to see some footage from the audience at the dress rehearsal and I can tell you right now that regardless of what the circumstances, Joost has become the people's winner.

Joost has become emblematic of something even BIGGER. Even though that one country wasn't involved in his case, Joost being held accountable and that one country's delegation NOT being held accountable despite numerous complaints has galvanised the audience against the EBU

Reports of EU flags being refused entry into the EUROVISION SONG CONTEST. Am I in the twilight zone???

BREAKING: Nikkietutorials has announced she will no longer be presenting points tonight. That makes (by my count) three major names who have chosen to boycott the grand final this evening.

I'm told by some Australians that they're able to hear a LOT of booing on the SBS broadcast, even through the dampening. Is this the case for others?

Former assistant prime minister of Moldova reports he and his team were refused entry to Eurovision with their European flag as it was 'political.'

Mixed reports about anti-booing 'technology' on different broadcasts.

I'm hearing allegations of not just boo dampening but also CHEER dampening for the more popular acts? Anyone able to compare and confirm?

I piggybacked off someone's stream to watch Bambie Thug and they sounded ANGRY. Like, not stage angry. Actually angry. I still haven't found any news regarding EBU totally ignoring their complaints. I want nothing but justice for them.

Evidence has been posted of Israeli delegation making absolutely disgusting comments about Ireland, Greece, Netherlands and Switzerland on public social media. Most notable is the misgendering of Bambi Thug, which [profile] isrbreaksrules reports is deliberate.

UPDATE: AVROTROS no longer handing out Dutch jury points at all.

UPDATE: Joost's visual designer has made a statement on Instagram with a short film.

Dutch broadcaster has made a formal objection to the EBU.

UPDATE: It's reported that Portugal did NOT perform live. Footage from semi final was used in order to censor Iolanda's nails, according to reports. Is anyone able to confirm?

Clarification on Portugal: She did perform live, but semi-final footage is being used on Eurovision social media as her nails were Palestinian themed. Comments turned off on instagram for only her performance, theirs is the ONLY one not upload to youtube.

Clarification again - ALL comments on instagram turned off only AFTER Eurovision was called out for this.
